Summer Movie Outfit Inspiration

With the start of the summer season, many (including myself!) aren’t sure how to dress both comfortably for the weather and fashionably. It can be difficult to find something cute to wear while simultaneously feeling cool and comfortable during the summer. This year, however, I found myself inspired by my favorite summer movies as well as the styles found at Bella Mia. Summer movies, such as Mamma Mia (2008), The Parent Trap (1998), Roman Holiday (1953), and more, feature a wide range of styles that can be easily adapted to stylish, comfortable everyday wear. Below, I have selected a few classic summer movies and styled some outfits utilizing the apparel products found at Bella Mia!

Given the coastal views of Greek islands and ABBA’s pop disco music, Mamma Mia was a no-brainer when styling these summer outfits. Inspired by the jumpsuits often worn by Donna, I chose a lightweight navy jumpsuit from Sage the Label and paired it over a crochet Sage the Label sweater. To finalize the outfit, I added some warm brown accessories and bandana to be worn in the hair.

The primary inspiration for this outfit was the Billabong halter top which instantly reminded me of the 2000s teen mermaid movie Aquamarine. The tropical print, the bright teal and green color were so clearly meant to embody the "mermaid core" aesthetic. Since the top is the main focus, I decided that a simpler bottom might complement the top best and chose a pair of white tailored pants from Billabong. Lastly, the accessories enhance the mermaid vibes further with platform flipflops, crochet bag, and starfish earrings.

From the very start of The Parent Trap, the twins display very different styles when they arrive at camp. Due to this fact, I decided to show off both Annie and Hallie’s fashion in two different outfits. On the left, I styled a more “preppy”, classic outfit using a yellow Free People vest and a Steve Madden skort. Accessories are simple, but chic and are reminiscent of the minimal 90’s styles. To the right, Hallie’s outfit is much more relaxed and casual. Paired over a Sadie & Sage linen shirt, a Free People overall dress highlights Hallie’s youthful style. Sneakers and friendship bracelets again embrace Hallie’s playful style. Though quite different, both styled outfits include matching locket necklaces.

Starring Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn, Roman Holiday quickly became associated with Hepburn's classic and elegant fashion taste. In this movie, Hepburn’s character Princess Ann famously wears a short sleeve button down and a belted circle skirt. In my interpretation, I replicated this base with a Roxy gauze shirt, a Steve Madden print skirt, and a few more accessories that bring a more contemporary perspective to this classic look. Not only is this a chic and classic outfit, but also one that will keep the wearer cool as it did Hepburn in the hot Italian summer.

Given the titular and crucial role of the traveling pants, the first step in styling this outfit was choosing a fabulous pair of denim jeans. These wide leg Daze jeans feature embroidered daisies all over the pants. To balance a heavier weight bottom, I chose a Steve Madden peplum tank and Billabong gauze button up offers some more breathability. Taking inspiration from the 2000s fashion found in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, I chose playful floral jewelry, heeled mules, and a classic leather bag.
